Well things have been C-R-A-Z-Y here! I am planning a blogging day today to get caught back up here! First we had a great time going to the aquarium with the Hughes clan! We had a picnic outside the aquarium and then spent hours and hours there! It was great fun and we can't wait to go back over and over next year! (it will be a new building too as they are building during the off season!) Here are some pics of our fun day! lots more if you have me on facebook in my album :)
We will be doing a theme in our lessons and crafts most weeks.. This week was aquarium week! We got to start the week off with some fun and we went to the Huntsman Marine Science Center Sealab and Aquarium on Saturday with our friends the Hughes family! We had a blast picnic first then a lonnnnnng time in the aquarium/sealab. It isnt huge but they have an AWESOME touch tank and the kids (and adults) played in that for HOURS! I will be uploading those pics soon and posting.
To go with our themes each week I have been ordering books in from the Library through their online catalogue after looking up books in the current theme online. I love this because it is giving us some great book options to look to adding to our current personal library and not only books that are at our local library... I can order from any library in the province and pick them up locally. I am keeping a list of our favourites so with birthday money or at Christmas and when out at the second hand stores I can snag as many as I can!
Our books this week so far have been
Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni
It got okay reviews but not one we want to scramble right out and buy. It is simple and cute but a little young for the kids maybe? They listened to it and everything but it just wasn't a stand out book to us :)
Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea by Jan Peck This book is cute..it is repetitive, fun, the kids loved it and it wasn't annoying to read ;) Definitely hitting the buy list! The ending made them giggle too!
Our craft today was Shark Tambourines filled with popcorn kernels.
Yes, you can say they were a hit. Though anything that involves a shark is pretty much a hit here right now ;)
Now what possessed me to plan a craft that makes NOISE I am not quite sure? Maybe some kind of self punishment? I will add that to the list of things to someday talk about when I finally get that much needed therapist ;)
Because we had just moved into our new home the end of June our garden got a REALLY late start for living in a place that has such a short grow season. I was still determined to have as much garden as I could this summer....So I planted the first and second week of July. We will have much MUCH more next year and considering that July was basically a torrential rainstorm the entire month we are pretty happy with what we have. I am hoping we can squeeze in another few weeks before we have the dreaded F word ;) FROST ... any time we have a warning I will cover them and squeeze every day out of grow time we can!
The kids thought this was so much fun and I can't wait for early spring when we can hopefully grow all our plants right from seeds and then transplant a bunch of plants outside and have an awesome harvest! (not to mention an awesome lesson!)
It is a day of new beginning....Yea, that sounds kinda lame and cliche but I am embracing it and letting myself be renewed and replenished with the energy of the "newness".
Today was the first official day of our home school year.(more on that in a bit)
Also the first day of this blog and today I am wanting to turn over a new leaf and start a more organized, less stressed out life. Less yelling, less getting overwhelmed because of the things I need to get done and trying to breathe more when dealing with Theodore and the challenges that come with his special needs. Maybe I will be back to stressed and losing it in a week but I really feel like this is a new start and a new day. It is the same feeling I had when I decided to start my "currently on hold due to pregnancy" weight loss journey lol. And though that is currently on the back burner while I bake this baby I still know I can do it, I did lose almost 60lbs and I am ready to start as soon as Legend is born. So here's hoping that my feelings can go on and even when the bad days come I can remember that I want this as badly as I wanted to get to a healthier weight!
SO.. now that I am done the slightly gag worthy babble here is the fun stuff!
FIRST DAY OF HOMESCHOOL 2009-2010
Theodore starting grade 1 and Aurora starting preschool.
Well we had a great day! We did two different little crafts then did Spelling,Math, and Reading for Theodore and ABC's, Numbers and Reading for Aurora. This wasn't all done in one sitting as neither of them can handle that so we did 3 different sessions through the day and it worked out well. Just as we neared completion of each thing I could see Theodore getting to his point where he wouldn't be gaining anything but frustration for both of us. So we would finish up the bit we needed to do and be done! It made me feel like the amount of work I felt he could handle at a time was very much right on the mark! Aurora really was liking the activities and kept saying "I am doing SCHOOL wif Theedoor"
Theodore did like to start things off by reminding me that he is sometimes more advanced in areas then even I know.. he can read at an advanced level but his spelling is usually more on target with his age group .. so i went with grade one level spelling lists.. well he informed me while copying them to his spelling book that he didn't need to be doing these because he knew them.. I ended up letting him challenge doing a spelling test and see if he could spell them all... well he got 7 out of 7 right without a second though.. so I will be looking for new spelling words I guess lol.
btw ;) yes that bunny has 4 eyes. It was a requirement by Aurora ;)
